Please review the Written Exam Instructions below. You must have your confirmation email and a photo ID to be admitted to the written exam. This instruction sheet provides additional information concerning the exam, including what will/won't be allowed into the exam and what to bring. The written exam is a time intensive process and will involve more than 4,500 applicants. Candidates should expect to spend a minimum of 4 to 5 hours on site.
- Application Period - April 1-4, 2012. The application period is now closed. We expect to accept applications again in the Spring of 2013.
- Application Related FAQ's - Questions pertaining to confirmation numbers, emails, and disqualifications.
- Written Exam Eligibility List - List of candidates who have successfully completed an application and are eligible to sit for the written exam.
- Written Exam Instructions - May 23, 2012 at 12:00pm at the Austin Convention Center. No other test dates will be offered.
- Post Written Exam Handout - Document to be handed out at the Written Exam. Provides instructions on the next steps.
- Written Exam Results - Only the top 1500 scorers on the Written Exam will be invited to proceed in the process. This list is expected to be posted on this page, by 5:00pm on Friday, June 8, 2012
- Top 1500 Scorers - Invited to participate in the Structured Oral Interview.
- Eliminated - Candidates who failed to score high enough and are eliminated from the process.
- Structured Oral Interview (SOI) Information - Tenatively scheduled for July 9th thru July 13th, 2012. The schedule will be randomly generated. Please plan accordiningly. Accomodations will not be made and no other test dates will be offered.
- Composite Scores (All SOI Participants) - These scores will be posted following the SOI.
- Initial Eligibility List (Top 120 Scorers) - These candidates will be offered a Conditional Offer for Hire and continue in the process.
- CPAT Preparation
- Medical Evaluation, Physical Exams, and Drug Screening.
- Final Eligibility List - Cadet Class #115 is tenatively scheduled to begin January 14, 2013.
Current 2010 Eligibility Lists - These lists remain valid for a period of one year from the date of posting.

The Austin Fire Department conducts Fire Cadet Academies based on budgeted funding provided by the City of Austin. Traditionally, this funding has provided for two academy classes per year. Currently, there is no plan to fund any additional academy classes for this year.
